Recent Female Appointments

Women accounted for less than a quarter of new Global 500 executive director and leadership team appointments made in 2023 and early 2024, underlining that much is still to be done if gender parity is to be achieved at the senior level.

Leveraging Altrata’s BoardEx Global Leadership Database, we identify the female executives that started new Executive Director or Leadership team roles at companies in the Fortune Global 500 during 2023 and early 2024. The BoardEx database covers board and non-board members, C-suite executives, senior leaders and professional advisers.

French automotive company Renault appointed the greatest number of new female executives during this time, hiring women for its Division CFO, VP of Brand Communication, Chief Communications Officer, Chief Audit and Risk Officer, and Chief Legal Officer roles.

US companies Ford, Walt Disney, Netflix, and Walmart are also highly represented on the list.

Only two women started new group CEO roles during this period: Sandy Xu for JD.com in China and Tarciana Paula Gomes Medeiros for Banco do Brasil in Brazil.  Six companies appointed female group-level CFOs including Ahold Delhaize in the Netherlands, Uniper in Germany, Dell Technologies in the US, Sainsbury in the UK, Allianz in Germany and BBVA in Spain.

These appointments are tracked in BoardEx and include the Global 500 female executive directors and leadership team members appointed over 2023 and early 2024. Aside from a few exceptions, in most countries executive directors are appointed to the board. Leadership teams are sometimes referred to as the C-suite, executive committees or management boards. They usually include executive directors as well as a corporation’s top tier of management. The Fortune Global 500, also known as the Global 500, is an annual ranking of the top 500 corporations worldwide, measured by revenue and compiled by Fortune magazine. Note: Market capitalization is listed as N/A for privately-owned companies.
